Students learn how to protect themselves from blood or blood-containing materials.
- The AHA Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Course is designed for anyone with a reasonable chance of coming into contact with bloodborne pathogens such as: Correctional Officers, Childcare workers, Security guards, Maintenance workers, School personnel, Hotel housekeepers, Health and fitness club staff, and Tattoo artists.

- **Site specific instruction is required for the course in order to meet OSHA requirements. Bloodborne Pathogen online certification course includes one part:
Part 1 – A go at your own pace online course (1-3 hours based on experience)
The Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens course teaches students how to protect themselves and others from being exposed to blood or blood-containing materials. This course is designed to meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements for bloodborne pathogens training when paired with site-specific instruction. Reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).
The bloodborne pathogen course taught for rescuers in conjunction with CPR or First Aid training is based upon the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard and is designed to educate bystanders and rescuers in some of the pathogenic exposure risks inherent in first aid contact. The course includes a discussion of the epidemiology and symptoms of bloodborne diseases, an explanation of the modes of transmission, the recognition of tasks that may involve exposure, an explanation of Universal Precautions, Work Practice Controls, Engineering Controls, Administrative Controls, and the use of Personal Protective Equipment. The course will also discuss the employer’s responsibilities, including the availability of an Exposure Control Plan, and employee accessibility to the Hepatitis B vaccine.

What does this course teach?
This course uses the PACT acronym (Protect, Act, Clean, Tell) and tagline, “Make a PACT, Know How to Act™,” to help students learn and easily recall bloodborne pathogens training.
Students may access all material included in the Heartsaver Bloodborne Online Part 1 program for 24 months following initial activation of their course key. This replaces the hard copy of the student manual.
Heartsaver courses are intended for anyone with little or no medical training who needs a course completion card for job, regulatory (e.g., OSHA), or other requirements. These courses can also be taken by anyone who wants to be prepared for an emergency in any setting.
This AHA Bloodborne Pathogen course covers the following topics:
- Designed for first-time or renewal bloodborne pathogens training
- Updated to reflect updates to the Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29CFR 1910.1030), which is published by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
- Discuss their exposure control plan
- Discuss how to dispose of sharps and other blood-containing items
- Teaches employees how to protect themselves and others from being exposed to blood or blood-containing materials
- Recognize warning signs and labels for biohazards
- Identify the types of spills and methods to clean them
- Meets OSHA requirements when paired with site-specific bloodborne pathogen training
